Our main goal in dentistry is to preserve your natural teeth and to help you keep them for as long as possible. There are times, however, when it is in your best interest (or your child's) to have a tooth extracted (removed) by a trained dentist or oral surgeon.

Tooth Extraction

Teeth can require extractions due to many different reasons. Perhaps you have a tooth that has been severely damaged by trauma or decay, or an impacted wisdom tooth that may cause trouble in the future. Maybe your teenager will soon undergo orthodontic treatment and does not have the necessary space for their adult teeth, known as crowding. Or your younger child has a baby tooth that stubbornly will not fall out, even though it's past time for it to go. Whatever the reason, tooth extraction is more often than not a very routine procedure.

At Renew Dental in Bridgwater, we understand that removing a tooth is not an easy decision. That is why we take the time to fully explain the procedure, what you can expect before and after, and how to best take care of your mouth following the extraction. Our office performs all types of tooth extractions, including non-surgical, surgical, and some impacted wisdom tooth extractions. We want you to feel confident in your decision and our team will support you every step of the way.

Why Would I Need A Tooth Removed?

Extractions are generally required due to one of six reasons:

  • Tooth decay - when tooth decay has become too large, infecting the dental pulp and the tooth is no longer restorable or.
  • Severe periodontal disease (i.e. gum disease) - tooth extraction may be recommended if the tooth is infected and/or painful or to avoid the periodontal disease from spreading to adjacent teeth
  • Cracks or fracture - large cracks or fractures have occurred in the tooth and it is no longer restorable
  • Impactions - there is not enough space for the tooth to erupt properly, resulting in the tooth being blocked or misaligned.
  • Orthodontic treatment - to create space for future orthodontic treatment due to overcrowding
  • Pathology - disease associated with the tooth and/or surrounding bone.

Benefits Of Having A Tooth Removed

There are many reasons why you may want to have a tooth extracted. Some of these benefits include:

  • To stop pain or infection.
  • To allow for better access to clean adjacent teeth, such as with some crowded teeth, extra teeth (i.e. supernumerary teeth), or baby teeth that haven't fallen out.
  • To prevent future complications from arising, such as impacted wisdom teeth causing cavities, gum disease, and/or root resorption on the tooth in front or cysts forming around them.
  • To allow other treatment to be done, such as an implant, bridge, or denture when teeth are too broken down to fix.
  • To create space to properly align your remaining teeth with orthodontic treatment.

The Tooth Extraction Procedure

The tooth extraction procedure will vary depending on the reason for the extraction and the location of the tooth. Generally, a local anesthetic is first administered to numb the area. If the tooth is impacted, a sedative, such as nitrous oxide, may also be given to help keep you calm and relaxed.

Our dentist will then use specialized tools, called an elevator and forceps, to extract the tooth. If the roots are difficult to remove, the dentist may need to section the tooth and remove the roots individually. Following the extraction, the area will be cleaned and post operative instructions will be given to help you recover as quickly as possible.

If you have any questions about tooth extractions or would like to schedule an appointment. At Renew Dental in Bridgwater, we would be happy to help you with making the best decision for you and your oral health.
