Saving Your Tooth, & Your Smile

Root Canals are a great way to save your tooth from being removed. If the pulp (nerve and blood vessels) inside your tooth becomes infected, a root canal can clean out the infection and save your tooth.

You might not think so, but your teeth are also susceptible to infection. When a tooth becomes sick and the pulp becomes infected, the disease can cause pain and spread, causing damage in other areas.

What Is A Root Canal?

Endodontic treatment (i.e. root canal) involves the removal of inflamed or infected tissue (i.e. dental pulp) from the inner tooth cavity (i.e. pulp chamber) of a tooth. This is done using cleaning techniques designed to remove as much infectious bacteria as possible. Once cleaning is complete, the cavity is filled to reduce the risk of later bacterial re-infection.

Why Do I Need A Root Canal?

If the inflamed or infected pulp is not removed, the tooth will likely cause a toothache or larger infection in the future. . This can damage other teeth in the area or spread to other parts of your body, such as the brain..

How Do You Know If You Need A Root Canal?

Several warning signs indicate that you may need a root canal. If you experience any of the following, please contact our office as soon as possible:

  • Severe pain when chewing or biting down
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swollen gums
  • Pus drainage from the gums around the tooth
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • An abscess (infection) on the gums

There are times, however, when there are no, or minimal, symptoms from a chronic infection, which is why maintaining regular dental checkups and cleanings with your dentist is so crucial.

How A Root Canal Is Performed

The root canal procedure is usually completed in one to two visits.

You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. Once you are comfortable we will begin the procedure. The dentist will remove the infected pulp using specially designed dental tools. The space will then be cleaned and sealed.

Either a temporary or permanent filling will be placed until you return for a later visit. If the root canal was done on one of your back teeth, a crown will be recommended to reduce the risk of your tooth fracturing in the future.

It is normal for you to experience some tenderness in the area following the procedure, but this will gradually go away.

How Long Does A Root Canal Last?

A root canal can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years or longer. However, it is important to maintain regular dental checkups and cleanings with your dentist in order to ensure that your teeth remain healthy and previous root canals are not starting to fail. If a root canal fails, it can require re-treatment, a procedure that is typically done with an endodontist (i.e. root canal specialist).
