If sedation becomes too strong, nitrous can quickly be scaled back to reduce the effects. Another benefit of nitrous is it quickly exits the body within five minutes following the completion of treatment, allowing for a smooth and complete recovery. This means following nitrous oxide sedation, it is safe for patients to drive home and go about their day normally, unlike stronger forms of sedation, such as IV sedation.

It can also be used for more complex procedures such as root canals and dental implants.

Who Can Use Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide use is safe for most people. However, it's not recommended for pregnant women or people with certain medical conditions.

Your dentist will review your health history to see if nitrous oxide is a good option for you. Children who are 5 years old and older can receive nitrous oxide with parental consent.

How Is Nitrous Oxide Administered?

Nitrous oxide is administered through a small mask that fits over your nose. You'll breathe in the gas through your nose during your appointment. . The concentration of gas you receive will be based on your individual needs to reach a level of sedation you feel most comfortable at.

You will still be able to talk and respond to questions during the procedure, and you can stop receiving the gas at any time. Nitrous oxide is quickly eliminated from your body once you stop inhaling it, so you won't feel groggy or out of it after your appointment.

Yes, nitrous oxide is safe for children. In fact, it's the most common form of sedation used in pediatric dental offices.
