Night Guards & TMJ Treatments

Reduce Damage Due To Teeth Grinding & Clenching

Do you wake up with sore muscles on your face, a sore jaw, or a headache? You may suffer from bruxism.

Grinding, also known as bruxism, or clenching of the teeth and jaw, is a common condition that affects people of any age. If you are waking up with pain in your teeth, tired or sore jaw muscles, or headaches, you likely grind your teeth and may not even be aware of it as it most commonly occurs during sleep.

Our team at Renew Dental has been helping patients protect their teeth for years by providing custom-made night guards, also known as bruxism splints, to protect their teeth from damage while sleeping. Call us today to schedule an appointment so we can help relieve your symptoms!

What Is A Night Guard or Splint?

A night guard or ‘bruxism splint’ is a custom-made mouthpiece that fits over either your upper or lower teeth. The night guard provides a barrier between the upper and lower teeth so they don't grind against each other while you sleep. The night guard is also adjusted specifically to your bite so that your teeth bite evenly on it. This spreads the large force from grinding out over all the teeth helping to protect both your teeth and jaw while you sleep. In doing so, night guards help to reduce muscle fatigue and soreness in the jaw, allowing you to wake up feeling better than ever.

Nightguards are similar to sports guards, but consist of a thicker plastic to help protect the teeth from the heavy forces of grinding...

Traditionally, making a nightguard consisted of taking gooey impressions of the mouth to make models of your teeth. At our office, we can eliminate these impressions using our state-of-the-art CEREC technology to take a 3D digital scan of your teeth! This digital scan provides an extremely accurate model of your teeth which is then used to fabricate your custom night guard. Your night guard is then 3D printed and adjusted to perfectly fit your teeth.

Call us today to schedule an appointment with our team of experts to get your custom-made night guard and protect your teeth against grinding and clenching for good! We're happy to serve you in Bridgwater and across Winnipeg.

How Does A Night Guard Benefit Me?

A night guard is a great way to protect teeth against grinding (bruxism) caused by stress, anxiety, or other factors.

Over time, grinding that is left unprotected can result in: broken or chipped teeth, tooth flattening, cracked teeth, loose or broken fillings, tooth loss, and recession of the gums.

How Do I Know If I Need A Night Guard?

Most times the signs of bruxing can be difficult to see. This is because the wear from grinding typically occurs slowly over time. With a thorough evaluation of your teeth at your next dental exam, our dentists will be able to identify any signs of grinding and recommend treatment as needed.

Other signs that you might be grinding may be more obvious such as you do not sleep well through the night. Waking up while still feeling fatigued, having tired or sore jaw muscles, suffering from neck or face pain, or having headaches can all be signs of grinding at night.

If you wake up with these symptoms some or most mornings it is important to get them checked out as early treatment is the most effective.

What Is TMD?

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, also known as Temporomandibular disorder (TMD), is a common condition that affects people of any age. Grinding or clenching of the teeth and jaw can be caused by abnormal function of this joint or the associated muscles which can be caused by stress, sleep apnea, tooth misalignment, arthritis, certain medications, and other factors.

Don't let TMJ pain get in the way of enjoying life! By providing a custom-made nightguard to protect your teeth from grinding damage while you sleep we often help to reduce TMJ pain, so you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

Night Guard Care Tips

It is important to follow the following care tips to ensure your night guard stays in good condition:

  • Gently clean your night guard with a toothbrush and cold water after each use
  • Store your night guard in a plastic container when not in use
  • Keep your guard out of direct sunlight
  • Don't leave your guard in extremely hot or cold places
  • Don't wash your guard with toothpaste.
  • Get a new night guard if you have worn through your current one or if it is starting to crack or break
