What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots used to support crowns, bridges, or dentures.

A dental implant is often the most ideal treatment option for the replacement of a missing tooth. A dental implant is a “man-made root” (i.e. titanium post) that replaces the root portion of a missing tooth. A crown is then connected to the “root” which will mimic the shape of the previous tooth.

Why Do I Need One?

A dental implant may be a treatment option if you are missing one or more teeth and want to restore your beautiful smile.

Dental implants have a very high success rate and are the closest treatment option available to actually replacing your natural tooth.

Implants are often used for several reasons including:
- Replacing one or more missing teeth
- Restoring your your ability to chew
- Helping to maintain the shape of your face
- Keeping your surrounding teeth from shifting out of place

Benefits Of Getting A Dental Implant

  • Esthetics – can closely mimic a natural tooth
  • Durability – dental implants are as close to a permanent solution as you can get. If taken care of, a dental implant can be maintained for a lifetime
  • Decay free – implants cannot develop dental decay like natural teeth.
  • Minimally invasive – does not affect your adjacent teeth and you are able to clean in between them easily
  • Comfort – gets rid of the discomfort experienced by many denture patients. Also, the implant does not affect speech or the ability to chew like a denture
  • Fixed – the treatment is fixed inside the mouth and does not need to be removed

How Does The Procedure Work?

The dental implant procedure is done in two main steps.

First is the surgical placement of the implant which is referred to a specialist.

Following the placement of the implant, there is generally a three-to-six-month healing period before the implant can be restored. This allows the implant to heal with the surrounding bone (i.e. osseointegration) so that it is stable and ready for use after crown placement.

Once the implant is ready, we start the process to creating an implant-supported crown. This is done in three appointments.

First, we take an impression of the implant. Then, once the crown has been made by our laboratory, it is adjusted and delivered. Finally a simple follow-up appointment is done to check the implant and place a small filling to discreetly cover the screw hole in the crown

What Makes An Implant Different From A Dental Bridge or Crown?

The main difference of a dental implant is it does not affect your adjacent teeth. While dental bridges involve cutting down the teeth on either side of the gap, an implant does not require this. Therefore, these teeth have a higher chance of staying healthy as you can clean normally in between them. Cavities also cannot form on implants unlike natural teeth under bridges.

Dental Implant Care

Once you receive your dental implants, the most important part of caring for them is to keep them clean. Your dentist will give you detailed instructions on how to keep your implant healthy and strong, but here are the basics:

  • You must clean around an implant just like any other tooth. Brushing gently around the outside of the implant is sufficient. To clean in between and to keep your gums healthy, studies have shown a water flosser is preferred when compared to traditional string floss.
  • You will need to visit us regularly for checkups and cleanings so that your dentist can monitor your implants. We also may take x-rays of your implant every twelve months to ensure there are no problems.
  • If you have any trouble removing food particles or forgein objects from between your teeth, stop by the office so we can remove them for you using special tools that are designed to work around implants. You can also use an water flosser, interdental brush, or floss threader as available.
  • Avoid chewing on hard objects such as ice, pens, pencils, fingernails, or hair. This can damage your implant crown and lead to costly repairs.
  • Avoid grinding or clenching your teeth because this can also cause damage.
